About Ajo Arizona

The copper mining town of Ajo is located near the Mexican border in Southern Arizona's Pima County. Ajo is a visitor gateway to Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, the Tohono O'odham Indian Reservation, the reservation's casino in the nearby community of Why, the border town of Sonoita, Mexico, and the beaches at Rocky Point in Puerto Pensasco, Mexico.

In the above NASA satellite picture you can see the town of Ajo and the New Cornelia Open Pit Copper Mine that operated from the early 1900's until 1983 when it was shut down after the price of copper dropped.

Eric Marcus Municipal Airport
Eric Marcus airport located about 5 miles north of the of Ajo was formerly known as the Ajo Municipal Airport. It first opened in 1943 as the Ajo Army Airfield and it was converted to civilian use at the end of World War II.
