Ajo Travel Guide
The copper mining town of Ajo is located near the Mexican border in
Southern Arizona's Pima County. Ajo is a visitor gateway to
Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, the Tohono O'odham Indian Reservation,
the reservation's casino in the nearby community of Why, the border
town of Sonoita, Mexico, and the beaches at Rocky Point in
Puerto Pensasco, Mexico.
In the above NASA satellite picture you can see the town of Ajo and the New Cornelia Open Pit Copper Mine that operated from the early 1900's until 1983, when it was shut down after the price of copper dropped.
